Corexit- the oil dispersant

Corexit was used in the Gulf of Mexico as a dispersant for the oil that threatened environmental catastrophe there, and is being used now on the oil that is escaping from the striken MV Rena off-shore from Tauranga.
What do we know about Corexit and it's suitability?
Here's a copy/paste from a blogger who has looked into the issue, and a link to his blog.

"As I have previously noted, Corexit is toxic, is less effective than other dispersants, and is actually worsening the damage caused by the oil spill.

Now, two toxicologists are saying that Corexit is much more harmful to human health and marine life than we've been told.

Specifically Gulf toxicologist Dr. Susan Shaw - Founder and Director of the Marine Environmental Research Institute - dove into the oil spill to examine the chemicals present."

Sounds like hideous stuff...why the hell is it being used here, I have to ask my ignorant self. I see Frog tells us that Gareth is off to research and will comment later in the day?

It was claimed, at the time it was used in the Gulf of Mexico, that the dolphin deaths there were not die to the oil, but to the dispersant.
Seems very nasty stuff, judging by the warnings about not touching it with bare hands. You'll know by now that the gush of oil has markedly increased. Those beaches will be ruined for some time and it's the invisible stuff that's mots dangerous.
