Trouble at mill

Should councillors blog?
Nope, I was told, in no uncertain terms by my fellow councillors, rounding on me for a hearty and unexpected strop-up.
Not approppriate behaviour at all, they chorused!
Cr. Riddell, on the other hand, said "What have we got to hide?"
Thanks Jan.

Perhaps your colleagues need to wake up to the world in which they live?

Surely it's the content not the forum that could possibly be questioned. The past Chair of ES had a regular "blog" spot in the Southland Times and often expressed views that would now be not acceptable if written by anyone in the current council.

Councillors should blog if they want to, but as with any public comment, they need to be aware of their obligations and responsibilities to the Council. I blogged when I was a councillor and found it a good way to inform the ratepaying public about decisions and the reasons behind them.

As bsprout says, it's all about the content.

Indeed Robert.
I'm doing what I can to be their clarion.
Perhaps I'm just not LOUD enough :-)

You are right bsprout - the past chair did say things publically that reflected badly on the others in the council, in my opinion, and I know you did your best to alert the public to those issues.
Pleased to see, by the way, that you're not being held responsible for the e-coli outbreak in Germany and Britain.
Imagine the irony (Mr Ecoli would love it)

Thanks Gary. The blog format can be scary for some councillors who have settled for the more traditional forms of communication - a blanket and a smokey fire, two flags on sticks etc.
I'll be doubly careful now that I don't bring the council into disrepute!

Obviously they have been browsing the blogs themselves to stumble upon yours?

Another vote from me for continue and see what the consequences are :)

Well Bio - seems it's all on now. The Southland Times arrived at the ES chamber half an hour ago, for an interview with the errant blogger, along with a photo for tomorrow's rag.
The debate is about to widen :-)

Surely they haven't just figured out you've got a blog?

Mustn't tease the elderly wild8crafty :-)
fact is, they're lovely people and probably too busy with caring for the environmment to be bothered with blogs
(They're in the room, reading over my shoulder. They're certainly showing more interest now
:-)
