Like a big red smile
*Image removed by request
Invercargill is proudly displaying an award known as the Halal Notice to celebrate it's prominence in the halal industry, where animals are killed for halal consumers across the globe, who require their animals to be 'slaughtered in a particular way, by cutting it from ear to ear and allowing it to bleed".
It's a proud moment in our development as a region.
The Southland Times article by sam.mcknight@stl.co.nz finishes by quoting New Zealand Halal Slaughtermen Union president Husain Benyounis, who said,
"With the confidence the award would impart on consumers, New Zealand should be in a good position to tap into the vast market in the future".
Smile everyone, ear to ear!

Whateve next?!
Maybe we could all just move to Galts Gulch.
Or, in reality, here:

Have you been Shane?
I will re visit your blog once the picture of an animal being slaughtered is removed. As a vegetarian I find it offensive.
Ha ha!!
Animals are slaughtering animals everyday, how do you cope?
How bout dem sharks, lions, dogs, cats, fish, birds, tigers,..............
At least muslims pay some sort of respect to their animals.
Exploit the earth or die.
Robert
Interesting blog but this pic is not of a Halal process. At least not according to the rules practised in the NZ industry. Please remove it before someone complains and causes an international incident. The sensitivities and culture clash is hard enough to manage without misinformation. Innocent until proven guilty does not apply here the accused must defend themselves. Do not prompt accusers we have had enough of those disrupting a vital trade.
Thanks for pointing out those things about the image I chose Arahina and Skua. I'll take it down, no worries. The image did look to me to be a fair depiction and it was labled that way, but I've not seen the process in real life so I'll defer to your better knowledge.
Shunda - what does 'humane' mean to you?
Everyone it seems, has a different interpretation.
MAF and the NZ Meat /Farming Industry understand humaneness very well. Massey has studied brain activity and stress issues and as far as possible think they can detect pain induced stress.
Refer: New code of welfare for commercial animal slaughter : http://www.maf.govt.nz/news-resources/news/new-code-of-welfare-for-commercial-animal-slaughte.aspx
Skua - your on-line name suggests a carrion feeder and opportunist predator. Did you choose it for that reason?
What the animal experiences is doubtless up for endless debate. The action of the slaughterer is another area that people hold strong views on.
Shane - kaitiakitanga doesn't translate as 'exploitation'.
I even find the heading distasteful; be part of the solution and leave the media topics to the media. Promote the good side and post up more of your own wonderful photos.
Lamington lover - both the photo and the heading are distasteful, as is the topic. I'm sorry to offend you. Thanks for the comment about my photos. I'll take some more and put them up. The halal slaughter disturbs me though.
An international incident. Omg. Seriously?
I'm damping it down now Shane (behind the scenes, Top Level.)
@ Shane Re international incident ... I was around when halal in NZ began. To me it was a technical challenge to satisfy competing interests: worker safety, hygiene (USA), religion (Islam), cultures (clash of), practicality, humaneness (EU). NZ's constant honest effort seems to have been recognised by "Halal Journal" but it is an ongoing fragile balancing act to keep the trade going.
@ Robert Re SKUA haha maybe Kiwis like to compare themselves to birds (to wit Shane's Haast eagle) but I was more taken by 'sounds like skewer' however I am aware of his reputation as a nasty little bugger (the skua not Shane).
Thank you Robert.
Shundra the animals you mention are carnivores humans are omnivores.
Omnivores can choose what type of food they eat and can survive nicely without meat. Not so long ago it was acceptable that humans ate humans now it is not acceptable as we have evolved. Present day vegetarians are leading the next evolution which incidentally is now being proven as a better health option. Start by having fish and chicken only no red meat and throw in a vegetarian meal each week. Not only will you feel better your thinking of these issues will evolve. Good luck!
Skua - I appreciate the work that you must have done. It's a very sensitive issue and the kind of thing that is vulnerable to erosion through exposure to the public view. The Southland Times should be very careful about what it publishes on the matter :-)
Skewer? Sheesh (kabab!)
Arahina - thanks for your comments - Shunda will doubtless take your advice, adjust his diet and return to make some more enlightened comments in the future (al la Phil Ure Shunda :-)
I too, found the image repulsive and confronting; yet on most nights of the week, I merrily serve my family some type of dead animal or another, despite being an ardent advocate and supporter of the SPCA. Hypocritical, I know. Phil Ure has my respect on this issue.
