Punishment (correction)

Bill English said,

"Corrections will be in two or three years the largest government department, bigger than the Ministry of Social Development or the Inland Revenue Department."

Does this announcement send chills down your spine, the way it does mine?
Something is very wrong here. We are investing a huge amount of energy and money into the business of crime and punishment.
Is this the theme that will define our country in the years ahead?
'Bulging prisons' says Mr English.
'Harsher penalties' and 'more punitive justice measures'.
Are we becoming the new Old Australia?

And what's more, there are groups clamouring for more.
Nothing Sensible about that Sentencing Trust.
There is a great deal of 'tightening up' of minor laws going on as well - the right to buy knives, searching school pupils and so on. Guess those private prison companies need to be assured of numbers because bums on seats equal profit!
