The Mighty 1 3/4 pounder
This is the hammer I bought yesterday, for $3. I read the night before about this hammer and its usefulness for what I plan to do, wood-work-wise, and was pleased to see it lying in a heap of clatter in someone's garage, waiting for me.

Do you use a sickle in the garden Robert? If so, how do you sharpen it?
I don't now, wildcrafty, but have been up until my latest epiphany regarding tools. I used a file to sharpen mine (I still have 6 sickles and my druidic aspirations prevent me from throwing them out :-))and a stone sometimes (I found a 'spindle' style sharpening stone in the soil of my garden long ago)but probably a knife-sharpener would be best and quickest if used regularly.
Is it basically the same as a knife edge, ie two equal sides? I'm trying to restore some neglected, old ones and it's hard to see what's going on.
What is your latest epiphany about tools? Not to do with gnomes is it?
I can remember many tears ago a chap sharpening a scythe and sickle with a stone about 8 inches long and slightly oval in shape. He would give the blade two or three strokes quite often like a butcher using a steel. I cant remember what it was made of but seem to remember it was fairly coarse.
Philip, I have a large stone on a wooden handle that came with the sickles. It was probably square in profile to start with but is now concave from use. It's coarse. Once I get the sickles restored I assume I just use that in the way you suggest.
