Thanksgiving

Our American friends had a Thanksgiving celebration and invited us to feast with them. We made a bread cornucopia overflowing with vegetables, and an apple, berry and plum pie decorated with pastry leaves.
It was some feast!
Mysteriously, we were required to listen to the extended version of Alice's Restaurant! Some of the guests wore feathered headbands!

Heritage fruit tree sale this weekend!!!

The Peasegoods, Russets, Pippins, Fillbaskets, Delicious and any other curiously named apple you can think of that grew in Southland when people who might have been your Grandparents first moved here and built thier houses and planted an orchard are for sale as fresh young trees, this weekend at the Environment Centre in Riverton.
These are the real thing, grown from the original trees that still stand, as gnarly old grandpappies in the sunset of their lives, on farms and in backyards around the region. These trees have proved their worth and can be relied upon to fruit well and withstand the rigours of our climate.
There are a mixture of trees that have been grafted by members of the Open Orchard team and some imported, wherever there are equivalent varieties, from far-away Asburton.
The trees cost $22.50 each or you can buy a cluster of 5 for $100.
We have apples, pears and plums for sale and you'd want to be in pretty quick to claim your favourites.
The sales of the last two years were very successful, everything sold quickly and there were those who were too slow off the mark and had to miss out.
We are open for business starting Saturday, 11 am, Sunday, Monday (not Tuesday) Wednesday (not Thursday) and Friday.
We have straw for wrapping but bringing bags or packaging of some sort will be a help.
