Tiddly pomme

World's smallest apples to be sold in UK supermarkets
(Hat-tip Karen)
'The world's smallest apple' is a bit of a stretch, given that it's not possible, in my experience, to differentiate apples from crabapples at the point where their size difference disappears, but still, it's an interesting story. Small apples are useful to young children who struggle to break into a Peasegood Nonsuch and certainly never get to finish one off! 'Tiddly pomme' is good though, borrrowing from AA Milne and the French word for apple. Clever. Pomologists who were raised on 'Now We Are Six' and 'The House at Pooh Corner' will be chuckling.

An apple found in a New Zealand orchard, labelled the world's smallest apple, will soon be sold in one of the United Kingdom's top supermarket chains.

The Tiddly Pomme, which is to be sold exclusively at Marks & Spencer, is roughly the size of a golf ball and is a miniature version of the Royal Gala variety, the Daily Mail reports.
It was given the name 'Tiddly Pomme' - after the classic Winnie the Pooh rhymeTiddly Pom by AA Milne - by the winner of an online competition which produced more than 6500 suggestions.
Marks & Spencer buyer Shazad Rehman told the newspaper the apple, which is approximately 42mm in diameter, is being marketed to encourage children to eat fruit.
"The Tiddly Pomme is perfect for kids.
"Don't be fooled by its appearance, what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in flavour."
Consultant David Cranwell said he came across the miniature apples on a routine walk around his New Zealand orchards.
If the tiny fruit proves a hit, Marks & Spencer, which buys the fruit from Empire World Trade Fruit, will plant its own Tiddly Pommes in the UK for a year-round supply.
