Whata
This storehouse once stood nearby to where the Riverton schools are now situated. I want to build one just like it, in which I could store my spuds. At one time, I bought the three posts in preparation for the project, but was thwarted by the requirements of the District Council, around such structures. The engineering requirements seemed to me, excessive. Mind you, it would be a significant thing to have land on your head, should a strong wind catch it.

Waiting for one's of the usual suspects to tell you what nanny-state pc nonsense the council is using to stop your building project.
How is the better than a rua kumara (kumara pit)? Does the air circulation mean they keep longer?
Rau kumara suit warmer, drier areas better , I imagine, as they are on/below ground. They can be made dark more easily, suiting the storage of kumara. These whata are rat-proof and difficult to steal from (take away the ladder :-)
I'd like to build a rau kumara though, as a rau taewa/riwai. Clamps work well for spuds and I have a number of 'Maori potatoes' I'd like to store away from the house.
It should be easy enough to build a rau kumara (ha, foiled the predictive text) and make it rat proof. It would be kind of like an ice house.
If you built your whata small enough you might not need a consent - do you have that many kumara?
Not many, if any.
A small whata's the way to go, yes, whataiti ne ra!
In the absence of kumara, I can offer ulluco me anu hoki. Pai rawa enei huawhenua mo te "unusual tubers from South America soup".
