Ecan

What will National announce today, about Environment Canterbury and it's future as a representative body for the people of Canterbury?
Will they return the selection of Ecan councillors to Cantabrians, or will the maintain their dictatorial structure of  commissioners appointed by the National Government?
I know what I expect; National will decline to give the people of Canterbury their democratic right to chose their own representatives. Instead, they'll extend their dictatorship, in order to further their own programmes around the development of irrigation in the region.
We shall see. Maybe the 6 o'clock news will end the suspense, such as it is.

Expect the worst.
On the other hand, irrigation seems to have gone off the boil. A bit like asset sales, deferred pending the money god smiling on it again.
So the kleptocracy have less to steal and fewer convincing reasons to usurp democracy. Maybe they will announce the phase out of the commissioners and an elected council as of 2013.

Ugh. So much for optimism.
The message is that democracy is over-rated. We can have it back it four years, once it has been twisted into a form that the government like. 'cept they will be voted out at the next general election, so they don't have long.
The words around "a great response to the EQs" ignore the fact the democracy was usurped before they happened.
The rest of my comment consists of a string of four letter words.
