Chairman Timms speaks for...whom?

Ali Timms, our beloved chair has told the attendees and media present at yesterday's joint meeting of Venture Southland and the Invercargill City Council, that issues such as fracking and mining should come from central government, according to the report in today's paper.  While that's an unclear expression - presumably she meant that the management of such issues should come from central government, the intent of her statement is clear - that the Regional Council, Environment Southland, shouldn't be dealing with fracking and mining.
I disagree strongly with that view.
Ms Timms went on to say, "They are too big for local government." By 'they', she must mean fracking and mining.
Again, I strongly disagree. Our role as a Council is to manage the economic and environmental health of the region. How fracking and mining fall outside of that prescription is beyond me.
It may be that Ali Timms was expressing her own personal opinion at the public meeting, though she and or the Southland Times haven't made that clear. Certainly, the council on which I sit has not formed the view she is expressing and she is therefore not representing the view of Council with her claims. If she was representing the Council, she's got it wrong.
Never one to jump the gun, I'm going to ask Ali tomorrow at out Environmental Management Committee meeting, to clarify this for me.
I'll let you know what she said.

Until this is clear you ought to discontinue operations forthwith. There can be no faith in an organisation which not only does not understand its own remit, but which fails on any supposed remit thusfar.

Good job Robert, this is exactly what needs to happen to keep people honest and committed to proper conduct.

We just found out that our regional council is now writing resource consent applications on behalf of miners and farmers through its own pest control company. The CEO said while he understands it looks bad, it isn't, and we shouldn't worry.

I may have a "Tui" and think about that a bit!

Stand for Council, Shunda. It'll send a shiver down their spine, if they indeed have one.

"....Council is to manage the economic and environmental health of the region"

Thats a joke surely, a council managing economic health....

Councils get to pump up the rates every year to cover what ever crap they want. Thats not economic management, thats a rort!
Your job is to manage the poo, not manage the money.

if the regional council is to be managing the economic health of the region you are doing a piss poor job of it ,
most councillors including you mr Guyton, only seem to be able to stop industry and enterprise ,, but of course that is what being green is isnt it ,,
green with envy at any one or anything that might produce economic critical mass,

robertguyton said...

But Towack, there's brass in muck!
The two go hand in hand in Southland - *Sings You can't have one without the pause other!

anonymouse - piss poor job of managing Southland's economic health?
Last reports have the region booming, economically. Your heated comments seem nonsensical in light of the facts. Just sayin'
I note that you don't mention the environment, anonymouse and I'm unsurprised. Being a non-green, you probably don't know what that is :-)

" just saying " ,, some people in this life talk ,, some actually create , which do you think you are mr guyton,,?
you quote some non defined " reports " about good economic growth in southland.
pray tell me ,, what area of southland is contributing to this economic growth?
or is the green economy producing more than just hot but clean air ?

Talking about hot air, there have been 3 smoldering fires in a Moreton street paddock for 4 days now blanketing the whole area in smog, our house stinks so I would hate to be in one of the close houses, and some of them are retired/elderly people. The person used tyres to start the fire. Ring the council and what do they say, ohh those naughty people, next time they will be fine. Great, and for the next week the fires smolder away.

Which do I think I am, mouse, or which am I?
You are unclear.
There are many 'areas of Southland' contributing to economic growth, mouse. Did you think there was just one? Which one did you have in mind?
Surely farming must be the epitome of a 'green economy', with it's extensive pastures? Surely? You are difficult to understand sometimes, mouse.

Toawck - I'll ask around.

green with envy at any one or anything that might produce economic critical mass,

Oh, you are creating a critical mass alright, a critical mass of debt, unsustainable practice, and reliance on fickle commodity markets.

Making money is, in itself, not enough anon, you have to be able to sustain your money making for it to be of any use to our country, otherwise it will actually pull us down quicker than you can say "bloody sandal wearin greenies!" when the backside drops out of the market.

Playing dumb won't help either.

weasel words and semantics councilor , but no definitive answer,
surely your " reports" on Southland, have more substance ?

it is surprising you concede that " farming " is indeed an example of greeness!.. after such a damascus road revelation one would hope you would extend that same admiration to those who are connected with agriculture

I've always declared that I admire those involved in horticulture and agriculture and believe those to be the most noble of all pursuits.
Did you think otherwise? If so, why?

Good Grief!

Thank goodness we're a boardroom full of Luddites and vote by raising our hands. Mind you, the hand-bone's connected to the brain-bone...
