How's Wellington's water?

Not good at all, according to No Right Turn.

The Wellington Regional Council 'State of the Environment' report says:

"Urban streams and rural waterways in intensive farming areas are badly degraded, with high levels of nutrients and faecal bacteria.
Streams in Kapiti, Porirua, Waiwhetu, Upper Hutt, Carterton and Masterton are among the worst affected.

Average levels of nitrogen and phosphorus have increased on dairy pasture since the intensification of Wairarapa dairying, threatening waterways."

I/S comments:

" These problems can be solved, but it requires local authorities to limit irrigation and stock numbers and crack down on dirty farming practices"

Hard core, that man. The movie 'River Dogs' painted an appalling picture of river management in the region. This report seems to back up what was shown there.

*Update hat-tip Anonymous:

"Stormwater pipes are spewing raw sewage into Wellington Harbour.
The harbour is also being polluted with animal faeces, heavy metals, cigarette butts and oil products that are commonly washed into the stormwater system."

We walk our darling pooch along the Hutt River coupla times a week, one of the few areas where dogs can be off-leash. 11 canine deaths due to outbreaks of toxic algae. Luckily for us, she's water-phobic.

I dont know if you have noticed RG, but your posts on how bad national are, or how good the greens are, seem to attract no comments at all, but most of your other posts do. A wise and clever blogger might take note.....

Yes, Towack, though that same blogger might look behind the veil and see how many visits such posts get and if he found that, say, an anti-what-he-doesn't-like post gets scores of 'hits', yet no comments, he might want to continue on with his mix. That said, my wife suggests I run three blogs; one with photos, one with gardening stories and the 3rd with political nonsense such as you describe.
Have you and she been talking? :-)

Suz - the algae's a serious issue and has yet to be fully realised, I reckon. Such blooms are a sure sign of maltreatment of the environment.

Some people don't like politics.

Awhile back, homeschooling was thought to create socially deprived children. In today’s world, this is far from the truth. Technological advances have made it simpler for homeschooled kids to stay connected with others.
