Provocative headline
The 'letters' editor at the Southland Times didn't mince his words when he titled my letter that appeared today.
Good for him.
Here's what I wrote.
"How silly does Solid Energy think we are? They are presently arguing in court, that they are not responsible for the greenhouse gases that come from coal and the damage it does to the climate, because they are only digging it out of the ground, they're not burning the stuff; they are innocent of adding to global warming and should be allowed to mine as much as they want. Climate change is not their problem, they plead. I can hear the cooks in a 'P' lab using the same logic – we're just the kitchen-hands, it's the users who are the criminals! Sir Geoffrey Palmer sees through their shallow argument and is fighting them in the Environment Court. I wish him all the luck in the world. He is going to need it if he is to turn the likes of Solid Energy and the other mining companies that are lining up to exploit New Zealand's coal. Their actions are without doubt contributing to global warming. For them to argue that their hands are clean is just nonsense."
I received a phone call at 7:00am over that one :-)

Can I ask who rang?
Commenter confidentiality, sprout.
A person who lives nearby to an existing coal mine.
You see? Wowsers can be useful after all.

That was a most enlightening article.
Benny Peiser reports the "IPCC Confirms: We Do Not Know If The Climate Is Becoming More Extreme"
"FAQ 3.1 Is the Climate Becoming More Extreme? [...]None of the above instruments has yet been developed sufficiently as to allow us to confidently answer the question posed here. Thus we are restricted to questions about whether specific extremes are becoming more or less common, and our confidence in the answers to such questions, including the direction and magnitude of changes in specific extremes, depends on the type of extreme, as well as on the region and season, linked with the level of understanding of the underlying processes and the reliability of their simulation in models."
