Its a bollard, capstans are rotating anchor winches, this one is fixed thus a bollard.
I know, petty in the greater scheme of life.
Another nautical term much abused is towrag.
Most people call it a toerag.
Towrag is what the old sailing ships used to hang out of the hole being used as the ships toilet on long rope.
After each "event" to user would simply pull the rope and rag out the tide to "clean" up before returning the rag to the brine again for a rinse and ready for the next user.
are you sure that it what a towrag is, I personal know of a few toerags around Riverton who dont meet that description, mind you, they do have rather a 'shitty' attitude to life. Maybe they need a good dunking :)
Thanks, Gerrit. That's the second time I've got that wrong. I keep thinking of the image on the Capstan Cork cigarette packet but now that you mention it, there is a winchy-turning aspect to that picture (from memory). As to your towrag clarification - that's brilliant! Now I know! What a great provision for the sailors - recycling at it's best. You'd probably want to wait a minute or two before hauling the towrag in though. Haste makes waste. And not petty at all. I love clarifications and corrections.
Animal - why do you hang out with such people? My Riverton associates are all very fine people, mind you, I could tell you a story about one anonymous coward who has been making mischief for me. Would you like to hear that story? (I'm not implying that it's you, btw. Perish the thought. You might find the story interesting though.)
Here we go then. The Society I'm chairman of receives funding from a local trust. A person wrote to this trust, advising them to stop funding us, because our works around the district were failures. He listed 5 examples. Our funders were upset and contacted us, wondering at the (unlikely) truth of the claims. Unfortunastely for the complainant, the 5 examples he gave were in fact works of groups other than ours, and as such, easy to answer. When the trust learned of this, they set about writing to the accusative person, only to discover that the name and address supplied with the original letter were false - the person was an anonymous, vexatious coward (my little embellishment there, but you'll understand). So you'll understand why I'm not entirely admiring of all my fellow man and am somewhat cagey when talking to people using an assumed name, animal.
Darn, I knew I should have supplied the correct name and address..... and the correct facts ah. That is a cowardly way of attacking something you feel strongly against. For myself however, I try to keep my name on as few things as possible, esp on here - the internet, as it seems to worm onto here by itself anyway. You know who I am anyway - Im looking forward to your positive and glowing references to my future sculpture construction for the main street. And to that point I did take some notice of your opinion of the colour - it is now not black but will be left bare and rusty - yeeha.
Rust rules, and it never sleeps. Appreciate the transparency (and your opinion!) You didn't come down for the social event at Fleck's hall tonight - shared feast to celebrate the harvest. When our crew sits down with your crew, lamb and lion, the world will be a better place. Mark my words :-)

I'm always up for a good story, as long as the truth doesnt get in the way of course.
