Ron and Gay Munro are highly respected farmers from Mokotua who have devoted their adult lives to farming sustainably, even to the extent of setting aside parts of their farm as wetlands, both retaining what was there and creating new ones to compensate for what was lost during the original development of the farm.
Gay has been the field officer for the Queen Elizabeth II Trust for many years, encouraging and supporting other landowners to protect the natural features on their farms. She and Ron are respected and liked throughout Southland.
Today, a letter to the editor of the Southland Times, signed by both Gay and Ron, described the great concern they hold over Solid Energy's lignite mining proposals. The letter reflects their deep knowledge of Southland's environment and their obvious alarm at what SE is planning to do. Most interesting is their call for a moratorium on new coal mining. It's an intelligent proposal and well supported in the letter by reasons why it would be in all of our best interests.
At the same time, a letter from a David Williamson of Invercargill, titled
Bullying Greenies, describes 'whining from the same old greenies' on the lignite plans and claims that he's sick of the 'same old greenies' are trying to 'squash any industry before it commences'.
If ever there was a mis-timed letter, Mr Williamson's is it.

Jonsey - for some odd reason, the Southland Times no longer publish the 'Your View' material on-line. It's curious. Perhaps you'd like to question them over this?
