Cheerio-o Sparks!

Yesterday, our ol' three-legged dog Sparky shed his mortal coil (if that can be said of dogs) and now rests in a plot beside the gravel path that leads to our house. We held a little service for him today, laid flowers where he now lies and recounted stories of his doggy life. A surprising number of those involved his stealing food; Christmas cakes and barbeque meats, the cat food from our neighbour's porches and thawing frozen foods in particular, and other funny escapades where he featured large.
We'll miss him, though we're happy that he's released from the discomfort of a failed third leg, his partial deafness and what was once a powerful and fear-inspiring bark, since faded to a wheezy cough.
Here's a photo of a photo that shows Sparky and Terry out on the estuary together.

Sincere condolences on the loss of your canine buddy...I'm sure he had an awesome life with you all.

Thanks Suz - Sparks did have a lively time here - he's been out on the water on rafts, canoes, yachts, padded around the estuary umpteen times, on the beaches and even up into the Takitimu mountains, through the snow and over the screes with Terry and I and when he wasn't out and about, he got to mooch around in our forest at home, eating apples off the trees and gooseberries from the bushes, eggs from the hen's nests and sandwhiches out of packpacks of visiting friends :-)

I forgot to tell you Robert, when I put your fork back Sparky snuck through the gate and sat at the back door. I tried to move him but he wasn't going anywhere for anybody!
RIP Sparks.

Jeez, sounds an idyllic and enviable life for 2 and 4 legged creatures!! Sparky was obviously a much-loved member of your clan, and a real character.

Thanks for all the effort you put into your blog, I always enjoy perusing it.

Sparks could dig his heels in when he chose to Shunda. One day he followed a wwoofer down to the supermarket and couldn't be ushered out til I arrived. Then he scooted :-)

Thanks for your encouragement Suz - it's nice to know my blog is being read!

Sparky (as all dogs) support us so much on our journeys on the planet. Maybe Sparky and my dog Gian (bichon frise) can catch up to share tales of their families! I'm sure they'll have some awesome stories to tell!!

Gee Poppy - I hadn't thought that Sparky might spill the beans in the afterlife!
Hope he exercises discretion when he yarns about me!

Even in the after-life I'm sure our canine family members are the soul of discretion and utterly loyal..us humans could learn a lot from them..Your secrets are safe Robert!
