The cabinet is bare.
What do fresh eyes see when they look at the Southland landscape?
Rather, what don't they see.
Trees. Native forest.
Tasmanian antiques business owner John Hawkins thinks there is one thing lacking in Southland – trees.
"I think you cut all the trees down. There are no trees," he said.
Mr Hawkins is a antiques business owner and knows his timbers. He's seemed shocked to find that we have destroyed a potential source of income for the region.
"Somehow, what started in a fantastic fashion has died a complete death. You should by rights have a staggeringly good cabinet- making business in New Zealand, using your fantastic home-grown native timbers that have fantastic figure and variety."
He's noticed, probably on his flight to Southland, that's it's all gone, that potential, that forestry.
Mr Hawkins, the headline reads, laments the loss of native trees.
He's not the only one.

Wasn't that Jandertons legacy to the country.
Get rid of the trees!!!!
His and that of many others pdm.
If I was a Cantabrian and there were someone other than Parker challenging Jimbo, I'd vote for them.
What? Can you please elaborate?
What did he do?
Meant - In fact, Anderton's efforts went toward getting rid of the tree-huggers rather.
He wasn't a friend to the Greens at all.
