Awwwwww!

A LABOUR OF LOVE

Robyn and Robert Guyton are planting a heritage apple orchard at West Plains with more than 200 trees.
Open Orchard organisers were offered the long-term use of the sheltered land to establish the orchard from cuttings collected from 40 old orchards throughout Southland. The property had perfect soil for apple trees, coordinator Robert Guyton said, and was sheltered from the weather.
"We expect the trees to do very well here and are grateful to the family who made the offer to host the special orchard on their land. " he said.
Mr Guyton's wife Robyn described the orchard as a wonderful step foward for the project to restore Southland's old-fashioned apple trees.

Why dont you just write articles here and then let the Times print them? It would save them alot of time :)

Dear Guyton Family,
I have just joined Robert's blogspot because I'm in the middle of designing a 140sqm orchard and vegetable garden using forest gardening principles. I followed the link from the NZ Crop Tree Association to your heirloom tree saving project (and NZ Gardening).

Six months ago we moved to 5 acres of gorse infested pasture and covenanted bush in Puhoi to build a house and art studios from deepest darkest inner city Grey Lynn. So I'm on a huge learning curve having only had a moderate vegetable garden prior to this. Sculpture and education are my knowledge base not edible plants frankly.

Is there a way I can plant your apple trees up here? How I can buy them or become part of the copyleft way of going?

There are nurserywomen up our way with reservations about the food bill quietly slipped through parliament prior to the Election, and its possible implications for heirloom seed and plant preservation. I'm hoping to get my fruit trees and seeds just in case it becomes difficult to source rarer varieties.

I would like to support what you are doing somehow. Your blog is a great source of inspiration.
