In them thar hills!

A treasure trove of minerals in Afghanistan, we read in today's Southland Times.
Should we be excited by this 'news' and is it in any case, new?
Satellite mapping and prospecting from the air would have told mining companies and other interested parties long ago that the Afghan landscape is rich and will have pinpointed just where those resources sit.
It's interesting to contrast the situation there with here in New Zealand where we are being fed the same 'news'.
The significant difference is in the quality of the terrain that overlies the 'trove'. Afghanistan looks largely desertified and ruined, in terms of farming, forestry and tourism. Our islands are quite the opposite especially with regard our string of national parks. Digging up those would be a very different proposition to that which Afghanistan seems to offer, hence the anger of so many New Zealanders at the Government's attempts to do just that.
