Walking the trees
At our West Plains orchard, we are walking down the undergrowth, rather than mowing it with a scythe, as it takes a lot of effort to clear around 350 apple trees with a hand-tool, while walking in circles is much more fun. Leaving the inter-tree grass standing keeps the rabbits and hares at bay and protects the smaller trees from the wind at the same time.
"Walking the trees" was also a great reason to have another picnic and after an hour wandering from tree to tree in the hot sun, that's just what we did.
