Fracking the Naki

This report shows that fracking has not been put on hold until the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has finished her investigation, as many believe it should be:

"More than six resource consents have been have been handed out in the past month giving the go- ahead for deep well injection of fracking fluid.

The consents were passed by the Taranaki Regional Council's consents and regulatory committee meeting yesterday.

Hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking, is being investigated by Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Jan Wright with a report due by the end of the year. There are concerns around whether the practice contaminates groundwater.

Deep well injection is injecting waste through a secure specialised well far below any fresh water. The consents allow the injection at depths greater than 3000 metres."
