It turned out well

I've been re-elected to the Southland Regional Council and I'm pretty happy about that! The next three years will be very interesting indeed, as the politics around water quality sharpen. Thank you very much to everyone who put a tick beside my name; I'm very grateful for your support. My campaign centred mainly around the length of my beard and it seems that ploy paid off :-)

About to kiss a baby, even though voting has closed.

It is for me but for some, Like Ali and Dave, it'll be a sobering time. Invercargill City Council now has 5 women on board! The women voters of Invercargill flexed their muscles this week. ES has just the one who stood, Lyndal Ludlow and she attracted thousands of votes. Ali's gone, Marion's gone, Jan's gone, so bar Lyndal, it's the Old Boys' Club once again.

Great news Robert, congratulations. Pleased to see Southland voters backing you and the values you stand for.

Thanks, corokia. I was very happy to experience the high level of support for someone who couldn't really be described as conventional or conservative. There must be a lot of thoughtful Southlanders out there, I reckon :-)

Lyndal will be very close to the old boys club but I think the Invercargill branch has had a very clear message sent. Now we will see the politics come into play as people position themselves and form the alliances they think will work. At least a vote for you was always a vote for someone who walks the talk and says it how he sees it. Plus who wouldn't vote for Santa.
It is always a challenge to work out why people vote the way they do. It seems Invercargill people are happy with women on council but not as a Mayor for some reason. I would have thought both Suzanne Prentice and Karen would have done much better but seems we want celebrity status more than anything else.
Now the dust has settled will be interesting to see the SoRD's report they are itching to get out.

Robert congratulations on your election, but to be honest with Roy getting such a mandate I suspect it will be a conflicting three years for you. Roy I have no doubt will bully his way to get Alis job and I can see him very intolerant of people such as yourself. Lyndall I have no doubt will be a good seat warmer a councilor more interested in the social and economic advantage of getting on ES than environment protection ...very disappointing that Nathan was not elected ...he would have been excellent as a ES councilor

Interesting comments, Pauline. I've taken note of what you have said.
