The Medieval Medlar

These three fruits reveal the medlars' rosaceae roots, looking a lot like rose hips, only less brightly coloured. I'm bletting these and the basket-full of their mates, in readiness for eating. I'll have them on display at the heritage Harvest Festival in Riverton on April 2 & 3, and probably provide an opportunity for people to taste the bletted beauties, providing they're brave enough to try.

Ha! From the old tree in the Gore Botanic Gardens! Ours have more modest crops, being only saplings by comparison to the spreading wonder that is the Gore medlar. I did ask permission to harvest and that was given willingly. I've a basket-full. Hot here in Riverton today. The bees are acting strangely. I have the windows and doors closed. Visited Janette Gellatly at the Express today and she's mad keen to do a photo and article. She reminds me of Tanya Batt; a lover of zany! The shoot will go well :-)
