Am amazed that anyone would think to chop them down. My grandfather who drove horse teams used to say they grew from apple cores thrown on the roadside by teamsters. Up around Waikaka they do seem to be spaced evenly but that may just be me.
Every tree adds to the richness of our landscape and should be valued even if just for the visual effect.
I love the old Chinese proverb " When is the best time to plant a tree. Answer 20 years ago. When is the second best time. Answer Today!

I'm with you on that, Philip. I've asked the District Council if it's their people doing it (I suspect it's some agency or other, not individuals) but they claim it's not them, despite saying that all activities such as roadside clearing of trees is under their management. I am happy to provide replacements, having made grafts from many of the roadside trees across the region, but it's better to leave the old, gnarled trees where they are, doing no harm but plenty of good.
