Spuds

Today we planted potatoes, dozens of them, in sites all around the garden. I removed the ground-cover (grasses and herbs) with a sharp spade, made a slit for each potato, pushed them into place then replaced the plants as mulch, then added a thick layer of the wood chips I'd been gifted by a student from years ago, now in charge of a commercial wood-chipping operation. Those spuds will thrive in that environment, I believe, and establish colonies of urenika, hua karoro, Bluff Whaler, La Ratte and so on. It looks as though it will rain tonight, so the tubers will be throwing out shoots like no-bodies business.
