Chinese surprise

Well, I didn't know that!
The two delightful Chinese women staying with us presently are full of fascinating information and eager to learn about everything we have here, especially the fruits and vegetables  in the garden. This morning I was offering them some Cape Gooseberries, (which they claimed were Chinese fruits :-) and was told that in China, girls take the dried 'gooseberries', empty them of seeds, pop them into their mouths and make bird-calls by blowing (somehow) into the hollow fruit! The boys, I was assured, whistled the birds with their fingers and it was only girls who used the fruity method.
Well I never!
