Federated Farmers call to double Councillors' pay
It was a very interesting submission from the federation's Doug Fraser in the ES boardroom yesterday. As always, we greatly value submissions but I found Doug's especially encouraging where he called for a doubling of Councillor's remuneration! I'd decline a pay rise of that magnitude of course, but felt flattered that the Federated Farmers valued my work, and that of my fellow Councillors so highly as to support such a generous increase.
You just never quite know what the Feds are thinking!
Shaun Yeo, Southland Times embedded cartoonist, made a lovely job of summing up Doug's other main point; that the Council should be reduced to a team of 6. From the gleam in Doug's eye, I could tell that I was a shoe-in :-)

Bull's-eye(to use a bucolic term).
Well said, that man (and the man who said what that man said).
He might be thinking of retiring from farming RG
or maybe he might be worried about getting voted out of Feds when some of the brighter minds in farming decide to rehabilitate it and he is looking for something else to bless with his great vision and insight
That would be some good company for you!
anything that reduces those pesky rates, esp the ones to ES would be appreciated, perhaps they could start a used car yard and sell the massive fleet of vehicles that sit around until someone drives home after work. Environment Southland, what a joke - I would love to see their carbon footprint
Under the rules of the RMA, Towack, the Council is not able to take matters relating to climate change/greenhouse gas emissions into account when making its decisions.
So they're sweet, eh!
Pleasing to hear you find the ES rates merely 'pesky', rather than 'debilitating' or 'unbearably heavy'.
We must have set them just right :-)
Its ok, thanks to Helens government I still get plenty of 'working for families' to pay my rates with....ahhh those kids come in handy sometimes
Surely you wouldn't claim something you rail against, Towack!
You well know that I rail against lower taxes (and rates), so if they wont lower them , how else does one get back their hard earned money, best I get it back and spend it where it belongs, on doing up my 38 chev, whoops I mean spending it on my beautiful children
