Kaikoura cracks

"Kaikoura mayor Winston Gray is taking a cautious approach after hearing Christchurch is to become a frack-free zone.
Asked if the Kaikoura District Council would consider following the Christchurch City Council's lead, he said it would be a good time to pause and wait for the results of the inquiry by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment.
But Ralph Hogan, who has been rallying the community and the council to make a stand on fracking and off-shore drilling, said waiting for the report would be a backward move.
"It is obvious that the commissioner found enough concern to call for a review, so it would seem appropriate that the council declares Kaikoura frack-free at least until the results are in," he said.
Mr Hogan said the council had stepped up when it called for the moratorium and he was hopeful it would now see fit to continue its support of Christchurch and the Kaikoura community.
Christchurch became New Zealand's first frack-free city in a move hailed by opponents of the mining practice. "
