Goldman sacks (the planet)
What are they really like, those Goldman Sachs bankers, the Big John Keys of the world?
Rolling Stone magazine described the institution as a "great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells of money."
I like that.
The 'rapacious and self interested institution' has been lately described as "toxic and destructive" by outgoing and seriously disenchanted employee, Greg Smith, who abandoned the bank after becoming too appalled to continue working for them. Listening to Goldman Sachs clients being described as "muppets" and hearing how they would "rip out the eyeballs" of those customers was too much for the highly regarded Mr Smith, who resigned, but not before tendering the letter that revealed his experience on the inside of Goldman Sachs.
What's this got to do with our own merchant banker Prime Minister, the self-styled "Smiling Assassin" John Key?
Su'p to you to decide that.

oh they yo tory maasters!
How much money was made from the swine flue scare?
I have just finished watching a very interesting movie about a pandemic, I believe it is probably pretty accurate of what would happen, I wish it wasn't.
One thing is for certain, if there is money to be made out of misery there are people happy to make it.
I personally don't think John Key shows enough evidence of being such an individual, but I think it is certain that there are others he is connected to that are.
Close Toryrulerz, but no cigar!
They're the Tory's masters.
If he's keeping bad company, Shunda, regard him as complicit.
It depends on how influential that "company" is.
Personally I think it is inevitable that this 'company' will seek to steer Key toward their agenda and that is almost certainly what we are seeing with asset sales.
This is what politics is all about, just an endless swinging between extremes.
The degree it swings is probably directly related to the ignorance or apathy of the population at that particular time.
This is why I think we have to put our hope something other than politics.
They can only get away with it if people remain ignorant to the dangers of extreme left/right ideology.
Why are people 'ignorant' do you think, Shunda?
Most people I know are sharp-as? There's bound to be others out there who are well informed about all sorts of things. My nephew's a petrol-head and knows heaps about that 'world' - his knowledge is vastly superior to mine.
I'm generalising here but.......
We live in little annexed 'states' we call our home, we wall others out and remove ourselves from community involvement in all but essential matters.
We become suspicious of others and prefer our distance, we proclaim all sorts of things from the safety of our 'thrones' and then lie through our teeth when around people face to face.
We collectively live in an illusion fuelled by the unsustainable use of the worlds resources, we are bankrupting our selves and we are bankrupting our planet.
If you don't play along, others become even more suspicious and begin to turn on you simply because you are free from the delusion.
I agree with you that people have knowledge on all sorts of things, but I would suggest that doesn't include the things that really matter.
Then we must teach them, Shunda.
It'll be for their own good :-)
Baby boomers are a big part of the problem, an extremely selfish generation.
There will have to be a cultural revolt of sorts to sort that nonsense out.
And it has already started................
He he.
Ahh ha ha ha!
Mwaaa ha ha ha!!!!!
And it seems you've cracked under the strain of it, Shunda.
That said, yes, there's change in the wind.
Who owns all the property in NZ?
Who is preoccupied with their own comfort at the expense of others?
Who isn't planning for the future?
Who is only concerned about the here and now and making money instead of the future of our kids?
Baby boomers.
The concept of a generation being particularly selfish is not outrageous, it is a consequence of political, social, and economic prosperity/freedom that has been wasted on self-centred living.
Not saying they are all the same, but there is a definite trend in this generation.
Shunda..in an ideal world, what sort of knowledge would you like to see prevail amongst the general population?
Also, very sorry to hear about the problems at your school.

Suz I would like to see NZers form a sort of environmental 'nationalism'- an intense pride in our land that is based on an understanding of its intrinsic value, for us and the entire world.
There are stories that must be told about this land of ours, and an affection must grow out of a rational understanding of the tremendous gift this place is to us.
Stewardship is a fantastic concept, and one that can be apolitical and based on logic and facts and reason.

Thanks, Robert seems to think it's all in my head, and hey, what would I know ;)
That sounds like a damned fine vision..you'd get my vote!
We too, had issues at our primary school when our son first enrolled, so can empathise.
