"A highly sensitive Government study into how much money can be made by changing genetic engineering laws will be underway immediately after the election.
Environment Minister Nick Smith is facing embarrassment after admitting he knew nothing about the study.
The proposal from his Ministry for the Environment is in sharp contrast to his assurance GE laws will not change."
How astonished the New Zealand public will be to learn that there are secretive things going on during the reign of this Government! And how puzzled we will be to learn that those things are in contrast to assurances we are being given by National's ministers.
"Ministry for the Environment spokeswoman Ann-Marie Johnson refused to allow staff to be interviewed."
The story from the NZ Herald makes fascinating reading.

Well what do you know! a real issue for a change.
But there won't be many comments, because people aren't interested in 'real' issues, as there are too many faux tea parties to raid!
Personally I find this GE thing very concerning.
Are you surprised that National is setting these kinds of things up, Shunda?
Deep-sea oil drilling, mining wherever they can get away with it, intensive farming, pumped-up irrigation in marginal landscapes, Genetically engineered plants and animals - all of those things that are clearly threats to the environment, are on National's agenda.
But John, he's nice, eh, and Phil's just hopeless!
Most astonishing to me is that people don't see these things and decide there and then to vote Green :-)
Robert, the Greens are fantastic in concept but not so much in reality.
Every second post on Frogblog is about Israel or the SAS in Afghanistan, or Cath complaining that women get paid 26.5 cents per annum less than men over a 30 year period.
There is just so much 'noise' and issues of yesteryear that one has to wade through before you get to something worth getting excited about.
I know what you mean, Shunda, though I don't see how it could be any other way. I don't believe for one second that a purely 'environment' party could operate in the NZ political scene - any party with 'green' as their heart has also to be able to answer questions on issues across the board, including those around the operation of our society.
It's just the way it is.
Yeah, but there is what you just described and then there is policy 'driving'.
It is time for a socially moderate party with sustainability at it's core, because this is something a good deal of kiwi voters could understand and accept and perhaps even get excited about.
They 'want' this in John Key, why not give them the real deal?
Okay. I will!
How are you going to do it? I would love to be involved.
Let's start now then Your position on legalized prostitution, Shunda? Gotta get this party off on a sound footing.
