This afternoon, I'm sitting on a panel to decide on funding applications from groups and individuals wanting to protect the remnants of Southland's original 'state'; forest remnants, wetlands and so on. Reading through those applications again this morning, I was struck by this passage:
"Prior to human arrival the Southland Plains were a mosaic of braided riverbeds, swamps and bogs interspersed by mixed podocarp hardwood forests with a rich diversity of flora and fauna. With the arrival of humans, particularly the Europeans, kahikatea forests were almost completely wiped out."
As I mentioned yesterday, I have three kahikatea planted beside the creek that runs through my garden. Perhaps that's too few.
