Sidewalk gardens

I've been enjoying these little gardens ever since I was young. I cheer them on, these tiny outbreaks of plants that push up through or spring out of, footpaths, tennis courts, drive ways - places that are designed to be plant-free, but can't always stay that way. It's a minor victory for nature, and ephemeral I know, but it still excites me. Here, I've photographed some great weed action from beside the local scout hall. These clovers and plantains have a strong root-hold and enjoy a life undisturbed by scraping tool or herbicide - for now. Some well-meaning spoiler is bound to spot them and swoop in for the kill, but in the meantime, I celebrate their little green lives. Oh, and the lawn that runs alongside of the path is just magnificent!

At my house they would have a brief meeting with boiling water and dishwashing liquid from cleaning out my coffee percolator...

At my house, I'd lift the concrete and create a natural path :-

why would you have a concrete path in the first place?

Why indeed, though if you have inherited one, it could be used as a heat sink or left as a reminder of days gone by (and blended in to the new garden system, by allowing delightful plants such a clovers, to scramble across it.)
