NZ's Oil Recovery Fleet

NoRightTurn has this comment and more on the situation with the MV Rena.

"At this stage its worth reminding people of our capability to respond to an oil spill. Below is exactly one third of our national oil recovery fleet:"

Hate to say it but this sorry state of affairs, so close to an election, could well do the Greens a power of good if they're willing to exploit the situation.

IMHO, with a marketing degree (shameful I know), I'd be ensuring there were plenty of photos of oil-laden wild-life, filthy coast-lines etc...strike while the iron's hot.

Lofty, meanwhile, is trying to sheet the blame for the MV Rena's grounding and consequent breaking up, on the Greens! That party, you see, promotes coastal shipping as a wise way to move cargo around in an energy-constrained world, so this disaster is of their making!
Ah Lofty, ya big dill!

Coastal shipping, Rg. Which century are the Greens in?
The Rena "affair" is another 'welcome to the world of consumerism. Get used to it.
Sorry, Suz, your marketing degree has let you down.
Get positive and come up with solutions. Labour has cornered the negative market, and the voter is not being 'turned on' by it.
A recent encounter with a marketing person was an eye-opener. He showed how solutions rather than the problem motivated people. Examples - Christchurch, All Blacks squad, Makatu residents (on behalf of their Dotterels, et alia.
Rg, there is no getting away from it, this is one heck of a problem, and will need a herculean effort to overcome. Come in the Greens with well researched overseas solutions to similar situations adapted for local peculiarities. Lead the push and publicity for what needs to be accomplished. Unashamedly label it Green, and demand ACTION.

Fred - I watched Russel Norman on the news, talking about the disperant being used to 'hide' the oil. He and Gareth Hughes have been very strident in their views about this incident. Do you for one moment imagine though, that Key and Smith and Joyce would take a blind bit of notice of the Greens?
Hasn't happened to date.
Smith looked sick on the news.

What solutions are RN and GH offering that will move this horror story to a better ending than the one we now fear?
On a more cheerful note I am told of a cunning plan to disrupt the breeding cycle of the codling moth that seems to like to share our ballarat apples - and its all natural. Seems if you tie this wee toggle around a limb the females get all bitter and twisted and wont breed!!

robertguyton said...

Yeah, the pheromone toggle's a good one, Fred. Poor ol' males, flitting hither and thither in search of the multitude of females they can just smell on the breeze. Works best in an orchard that is calm and breeze-free, so down here, I'm not so sure it'd be much use :)
I take your point about offering solutions, Fred, to all the country's ills. I can only say that in my experience, that has been the Greens approach to every issue, from education through to environment. The Party doesn't have the resources that a Government has; researchers by the score and the money to commission studies, but they/we do our very best. The solution to that of course, is to put the Greens in Government then watch these problems get solved, quick smart!
As to the MV Rena, it's very bad and sad to watch the environment up there fill with toxic substances. While I sympathise with the people up there, missing out on their summer playground and all, I feel for the environment more. Clean seawater is one thing, dispersant and bottom of the barrel oil is another. The three don't mix.

Fred, I agree with coming up with positive solutions etc, I was trying to make the point that the reasons for needing solutions needs to be kept in the fore-front right now. It's no longer a what-if scenario; it's happened, and it's ugly. The Greens are often mocked and derided for their world-views..I'm thinking a few voters out there may now be reconsidering those fruit-loop watermelons (Sorry Rob).

As an aside, I'm a Bed & Board supporter with the SPCA, and frequently receive correspondence requesting extra money, sometimes with their news-letter which invariably has the most horrendous tales of animal cruelty. We also at times receive very cute post-cards of the animals that have recuperated in our sponsored cage, fit and well. It's the emaciated and tortured animals that haunt me and that ensure we race to that phone and donate. Now that's clever marketing!

Oh you big fat twister of the truth Bobby, but no great surprise there I suppose.( I am far to polite to call a liar)

Do you deny that your beloved watermelons subscribe to more coastal shipping?? No of course not.
I make the truism that the more coastal movement there is, the more potential for disaster.
I have never "blamed" the watermelons for this particular event.
But I will say that the green house is surrounding you lot, be bloody careful throwing shit at those actually responsible for dealing with this problem.
It is easy to fire crap from the sideline, and play politics with this issue, without actually having to get dirty hands, as is the case with Normans and your child MP Hughes & Co.

Over to you ya little dill!

Suz - your comments are very interesting - you've described the effective use of two forms of communicating with the general public, provocative and alluring, emaciated animals .v. cute kittens. I'd use the same methods if I was fighting for a cause :-)
No offense taken at the watermelon thing. I love watermelon and have never found it objectionable when used to describe the Greens. There are worse fruits in the world :-)

Lofty - Dad always did step in when you were spinning out.
"I make the truism that the more coastal movement there is, the more potential for disaster." It is a truism Lofty, that's true. If I may...
"I make the truism that the more deep-sea drilling for oil there is, the more potential for disaster."
I'm sure you'll agree.
You imply the Greens are 'throwing crap from the sidelines' - care to expand on that? Do you mean they are criticising the particular dispersant that has been used? Yes they are and so am I.
Do you mean they are critical of the speed of the response from National and their 'hands-off' approach to the early stages of every disaster they've been party to over the past three years?
They have and so am I.
Am I on the right track here, with your criticisms?
