Timms spells it out

She's short and she's feisty and today's Southland Times opinion piece reveals what she looks like when she waves her stick. Chairman Timms likes to have her say from the high chair and right now, she's talking about Waituna. More specifically, the various efforts by Environment Southland and her supposed partners in the campaign to save the lagoon from degenerating into a sloppy bowl of muck. The article in Saturday's paper begins as a description of the State of the Environment report on fresh water in the region, in which she goes to some lengths to say that the blame for the region-wide deterioration must be shared between user groups, not just farmers, but soon refines her aim to a few user groups who are not playing the game around the Waituna effort.
And good on her for doing so.

"Environment Southland has been trying to work in partnership with DairyNZ, Fonterra, Beef&Lamb NZ and Federated Farmers to try to help farmers in the Waituna catchment to limit their impact on the threatened Waituna Lagoon. This becomes difficult when we are undermined by industry representatives who say one thing and do another."

That's some straight shootin' right there Ms Timms!
Our stirred-up chair goes on...

"I am calling on DairyNZ and Federated Farmers to commit to a real collaboration rather than paying lip service to it."

'Lip service' eh? Ms Timms has obviously refrained from using the more commonly heard farming term, sensitive soul that she is.

Sounds like the kind of delay that could result in the ruination of an internationally recognised and valued lagoon to me. Not the kind of involvement any farming organisation, especially those recognised as leaders, would want to have, I'd have thought.
I hope the big-wigs in DairyNZ, Fonterra and Federated Farmers get their paper early today and get busy making Ms Timms happy, 'cause it sounds like she not too chuffed just now!

Thanks Kylie - I was searching for it just now (and couldn't find it - where were you looking?
I'll put the link into the post.
What do you reckon about Ali's accusations?
I'm backing her here.

Not looking anywhere, they aren't online, that's why I scan them in each week. Letters to the Editor daily (unless I'm having a bad day). Only just did it.
That link is to my document sharing site that I have because ICC never upload ALL documents and now I use it for many uses and has photo album too with old pics of Bluff and Invers (got old postcards yet to be scanned, not enough time). If you ever want to share any docs I can add you and you can create your own folder for whatever you need and choose whether to share publicly or by invite only. Great for community groups and I only pay $50 a year or free to create your own but that is more suited for photo sharing whereas I needed more space for documents. If you're ever wanting anything online from paper or file just flick me an email and I can upload if you want.

Thanks again Kylie.
I wonder why that opinion piece wasn't up on the Times website?
To busy watching Japan flail about I suppose.

They haven't done them for ages, only the 'editorial'

One thing I can support you on Bobby is the waterway cleanliness issues, as you know.
In fact I am actively looking to involve myself at a local level in raising more awareness around this.

I don't have to like your politics to know that you are right in this.

In my area there are other environmental problems that need addressing also, regardless of politics.

That is great Lofty. I hope you'll let me know what it is you involve yourself with so tht I can follow your progress and celebrate your successes :-)

It is amazing how far many farmers can jump when the bar is raised. For too long the bar has been lowered so that just stepping over was all that was required.

This is proof of what can be done:

My conversation with a Landcorp chap demonstrated what Fonterra could achieve if they had the will:
