Southland creativity
Today I visited Lesley's farm. He's an inventive guy. His tunnel house sheltered blossoming peach trees, growing in tractor tyres. Guinea pigs ate down the grass on the floor, tootling out into the wide world through clay pipes if they wished. He'd built 30 starling nest boxes and all were occupied last year. His tractor was fitted with a custom-made hood. He dug his own wells, using a truncated spade, and lined them with ...car tyres!

Very cool! Is there a reason he wants the starlings around?
Don't know about lining the well with car tyres though. Are they in the water?
The idea was to draw the starlings out of the farm sheds - an ongoing problem for farmers, and settle them harmlessly in their own apartments - it didn't work though - starling numbers increased and the sheds got no cleaner.
The tyres (as you can see in the photo, go right down into the water). I don't think it was for human consumption. Lesley had dug himself a cellar also, down into the clay, for storing wine and apples and vegetables. He likes to dig! He had made a goldfish pond and one wall was a car windscreen, so you could see into the pond (on top of a slope) like an aquarium. Lesley cuts firewood for sale and had a huge, perfectly stacked ... stack. His wife called that area his gymnasium.
Sounds very interesting. He could run guided tours!
