"First off, there is the obvious impossibility of simultaneously increasing fossil fuel production and responding effectively to the unprecedented threat of climate change."
Kennedy Graham describes the National Government's slick view of the future with a post on Frogblog titled "How many jobs will oil and gas bring New Zealand".
He begins with comments on lignite and they way mention of that has been removed from or hidden in the Energy Strategy paper National released just recently, then goes on the describe how well we won't do, in terms of employment, should these risky projects go ahead.
I like the statement at the top of this post though. It epitomises for me, the stupidity of National's plans for our country.

but Bobby .. you came out a few days ago supporting oil production .. what has changed bOb?? not pandering to your true fans I hope?
Well jabba, if anyone was to believe the things you say, they'd be very confused. You are very welcome though, should you wish to prove you reliability and credibility, to copy and paste the relevant quote here for anyone interested to judge the veracity of your claims :-)
Perhaps this is part of the brighter future we were all promised back in 2008. In this instance the source of the brightness is a gas flare from a drilling rig?
Our beacon of hope in troubled times Armchair Critic.
refer Keeping Stocks Hughes caption:
"As for your question, you already know the answer - every New Zealander (bar the very young and those who own nothing) owns something made using coal or oil. What a daft question! Yes, I do!!
any other questions bOb?
if that is what constitutes a beacon of hope, I prefer hopelessness.
The real point is there will be no boom times for NZ. Royalties may be just a mirage.
The MED commissioned Woodward report confirms domestic production from existing fields is falling off a cliff and royalties will have shot their bolt within 2 years.
Most of the much hyped royalty figures for frontier fields are 25 years away according to the Report and assume more oil will be found. Not that you would know this from the Dom Post and other coverage.
For a dissection of the Woodward report see http://oilshockhorrorprobe.blogspot.com/2011/09/oil-royalties-mirage.html
jabba - your grasp of ideas is tenuous at best, entirely absent in this instance.
I can't make head nor tail of your jabber, so I doubt anyone who doesn't know your history has a snowball's chance of understanding you.
You are welcome to have another crack at it though. I like your perseverance. It's very boy-scoutish!
Armchair Critic - don't be down-hearted. Perhaps Ban Ki-moon talked sense into John Key-goon while he was here and our oily, coal-lovin' PM has understood that Climate Change is real.
Thanks Dennis. Smoke and mirrors then, with the danger of environmental disaster thrown in to make it more interesting.
I'll read your links.
bOb .. You seem to have a short attention span. You are a hypocrite. I said you were an oil production supporter, you denied it and asked me to prove it, I did and off you go again. Bob, you are a hypocrite
Nonsense jabba. You asked if I used products that needed oil or coal in their production. I said I did. I added that my only objection is to as yet un-dug lignite and un-drilled-for oil, not those mines and wells already producing. For you to conclude that I was a hypocrite from that is a little feeble. For you to repeat it over and over hoping to gain traction from your mal-thinking is worse than a little feeble.
Have a wee think about it jabba.
