Not a pretty picture

The abattoir at Mataura backs onto the Mataura River and doesn't add to the beauty of the awa in any way that I can see.

Ugh. Clean discharge or not, the picture tells a sad tale. Surely southern pride extends to appearance?

Nope. We're pragmatic to a fault. Those falls were once the glory of Murihiku. What you can't see is the paper mill that crowds the other shore and the damage done to the falls themselves by explosives at the time they were being 'developed' for power generation.
Kinda makes me cringe. Wanna see more of that kind of thing from around the region?
That'd be dis-loyal wouldn't it?
Like telling our overseas markets that despite what the Prime Minister says, our rivers aren't 100% clean and swim-able though I would love to see Mr Key take a dip here, below the outfall from the Mataura Meatworks. That'd wipe the grin from his chin.
