Pike River scandal

Kevin Hague is revealing more than the Government and Pike River Coal will be comfortable with at the enquiry being held presently. Already, he has turned the spotlight onto the escape-ladder situation, where platforms required previously, were not in place due to 'relaxing' of the rules. Now, Kevin has revealed that the two miners who escaped the initial blast phoned for help and got an answer-phone!
This is very disturbing to hear and damning for the company.
Kevin Hague, Green MP is telling it straight, as Greens do!

ER--Didn't the Greens have a say in the number of ventilation shafts installed in the Pike River mine?

They may have Tired Farmer. Is there an issue with those? So far, what I'm hearing is that National 'relaxed regulations' and the ladder-platforms, mine inspectors and communications issues are being sheeted back to that. Kate Wilkinson is refusing to answer questions in the enquiry. It looks very bad at this point.

We are just paying for National's inability to take advice in the 90's when the Coal Mining Act was repealed. They still refuse to follow advice now and we can only imagine what terrible things will develop because of this in the future.

Kate Wilkinson is in the gun and shedding responsibility as fast as she can.
But Kevin's on the hunt.

Harry Bell (former Chief Inspector of Coal Mines) certainly seems to think more ventilation was needed.

See Otago Daily Times National News 14/7/11.

" Mine Inspector wanted Pike River shut down".

I agree fully with Harry Bell and there are more issues than just ventilation.

Hi Robert,

From my reading DOC/Greens didn't help the situation

Hi Tired.
I'm very interested to learn more - is there a link to something I can look at online? if not, and you have a moment, a precis would help :-)
