Selling state assets

Rest assure, my fellow New Zealanders - you will not lose control of your own assets. Only 49% will be sold, and those will be bought by mum and dad New Zealanders. You have nothing to be concerned about...or so the message went when Key and English started floating the idea of selling off our energy companies.
In today's Southland Times, this:

Buy state assets or else foreigners will: English

Shares in state assets will go to foreign owners if Kiwis are not prepared to front up and buy them, Finance Minister Bill English has warned.
His comments came as Acting Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf called for New Zealand to be more open to foreign cash and to dump screening of foreign investment.
Mr English said yesterday it was unlikely shares would go overseas in the planned sale of ... blah blah blah...

"We are saying that New Zealanders are at the front of the queue but if enough of them don't show up, it won't be 49%"

Difficult to fully express my disgust at English's statement here or to convey how conniving I believe this Government is, over this issue in particular, each issue they have dealt with in general.
I wonder if others scanning the ST for news this morning are choking on their coffee over these statements by our lad from Clutha/Southland?

Hang on, has anyone pointed out to Bill that we already own them? His message really is "we are confiscating them from you, and if you don't give us money to get back what we confiscated, we'll sell them to someone else".

This is of grave concern in my opinion, I just can't see where this has worked before or how it can work now.
We are locked into this global economic system that is heartless and cold.
Respecting and preserving strong communities is not communist, it is just common sense!
The loss of a sense of place and well being is the most destructive aspect of modern Kiwi culture, we are collectively losing our identity and to have it replaced by state imposed worship at the altar of "economic development".

I agree with you Shunda - community is the answer.

Yes Armchair - that's the way it is. Are we so foolish that we'd fall for it?
Only if those who are 'buying' the shares believe that they are going to prosper from doing it - in other words, greed is our archilles heel - surprise, surprise!

(Can I be a minion in your army?)
Perhaps you'll assume control over your community (benign/benevolent control) and the Coast will flourish.
I'm backin' ya!
But Shunda - 'state' imposed?
The wonderful Mr Key has become Nanny McKey?
Oh yes indeedy!

Why dont we all just "own" "everything" then? Why draw the line at state assets?

I'll match your "Why dont we all just "own" "everything" then? Why draw the line at state assets?" with a couple of questions of my own, Shane.
Why do birds sing? And why is the sky blue?
In other words - if you have something to say, have the courage to actually say it.

It's already happening Robert!

After trying for some time to get people here to value a part of my community that I hold very dear, I got the following in part of an email late on friday from a 'high up' in the council:

however Council is starting to consider the area a potentially significant asset for eco-tourism (as well as for the local population) and is looking for this to be developed into a major attraction – as well as an opportunity to further ecological restoration of the area.

Brought a tear to my eye! Finally a breakthrough!! if you lived here you would really understand just how significant this is for my community.

Excellent Shunda - and if the email is referring to the site I think it is, happy days!
Have you seen the drawing of the stork swallowing a frog and the frog , half-swallowed has reached out with its froggy hands and is strangling the stork?
