Herd of kina?
Here's a brilliant idea!
Invasive seaweed undaria is spreading through the otherwise pristine Fiordland marine environment. Killing it all by hand is not possible but .... kina like to eat it ... in fact they relish the seaweed, so ... and here's the Great Thought (and it came from a passing kayaker), release the kina! They'll eat it back and their numbers will increase into the bargain.
The wet-suit clad biosecurity boys at Environment Southland are herding the prickly fellows up in nearby pastures and relocating them into the undaria stands where we expect they'll enthusiastically munch their way to the point where the undaria is seriously under control, if not beaten.
Seems to me an elegant solution to a thorny problem (though it's the solution that is thorny, if you get my drift).

I wish Blogs had a "like" button :)
This is a great idea and I hope it works.....go kina!!!
I got quite excited when the bio guys described their plans to the council renetsil. It's not so often you hear of anything so creative. Last night, here on Rakiura, I spoke to a musswel farmer who had other ideas about this and I'll up date soon.
