The EPA (Environmental Protection Authority) farce

National has constructed an authority (oh, how they love that word!) to protect our environment.
Yes, the laughter you hear in the background is as hollow as it gets.

The Green's Dave Clendon says, amongst other things, that the just-announced EPA Board was light on environmental champions and heavy on development and infrastructure representatives. Mr Clendon also says that there was something Orwellian about talk of 'balancing' environmental and economic interests, the Green MP said: "The Environmental Protection Authority should be focused on protecting the environment. 'Balance' is a code word for more drilling and more mining and more development, giving up a bit more of our land and water every year.
"It is hard to believe that any agency formed by John Key's Government will give us greater environmental protection. They're keen to mine our National Parks, drill in deep water without any safety plan and they sacked ECan to make it easier to irrigate despite a water crisis in Canterbury," said Mr Clendon.

It's hard to top what Dave has said. He's hit the nail right smack on the head with this  press release.

Look upon these works, ye Greenies, and despair!

Robert, why aren't the Greens interested in the circus that has become the West coast regional council?

The news in the paper tonight reveals legitimate grounds to sack half of them!!

What's that news Shunda?
Reveal all!

One councillor declared his intention to remove the entire council (not just councillors!) from existence by deliberately throwing spanners in the works.
The two bully boy councillors turn up at court to support a farmer in breach of resource consent, in order to intimidate council staff.
Three councillors admitting blatant conflict of interest but refusing to abstain from voting.
A declared intent to get farmers and miners off prosecutions whenever possible and bragging about doing so when one councillor was "away".

It is a real circus up here that is for damned sure.

It's not a "Protection Agency" at all.
Clearly, from its design, it is a "Management Agency".
Its purpose is to see the gradual destruction of the environment, by agreeing to a little bit of destruction, in exchange for a prediction of "economic benefits". Worse than that, it's there to stop local decision making by saying "it's in the national interest", which just means teh benefits go elsewhere. I can't believe how f**k*d up the whole thing is.
Let's face it, a proper protection agency would mostly say "piss off, you can't do that".
I think the best name for it would be the "Environment Destruction Management Agency". So I'm not going to buy into the language, and I refuse to use the "P" word, or use the abbreviation, so people know I think it's nothing to do with protection.
Which abbreviates very nicely, too.

Once again Armchair Critic, you cut to the chase, frame the debate and strike to the heart of the matter. I too reject the language used and instead will join the war against 'p'.

Shunda - too, too dark for me, at this distance. I have my own shadows to box with.
Whip your West Coast Green MP into action. I know you've tried but try again. There is no strong link between Regional Councils and Green MPs I propose.

All I wanted to do was opine that National are a bunch of lying, thieving w**k*rs.
I suppose, as part of my employment, I'll need to refer to them by their name. But I'll make sure my views on what they actually do are clear, too.
Perhaps the "p" should stand for "plunder"

I agree with Russ

" it's been set up to enable short term economic development under the pretence of environmental protection. It is a totally dishonest process."

Seems to part of their long term plan to sell us and everything off.

robertguyton said...

There must be a word or phrase that describes that sort of behaviour and those sorts of people Marty. Searching....
