'The world continues to warm' say both the Southland Times and the Otago Daily Times, with a shared article that doesn't beat around the bush over climate change - Atmospheric CO2 rising fast says the ST, with the ODT titling their version: Temperatures rise as gases in climate mount. Will anyone take any notice of an article that clearly states that 'The world's climate is not only continuing to warm, it is also adding heat-trappng greenhouse gases even faster than in the past.'?
It's difficult to believe that this report will move many, if any of us to action or even acceptance of the looming disaster.
'The indicators show unequivocally....'
'There is a clear and unmistakable signal...'
Does this move you? Perhaps you're suffering from climate change fatigue, or maybe you believe the science 'isn't in yet', or maybe you believe at all to be a conspiracy by some secret cabal/sect/uber-rich organization to fool us all and bleed us dry, whatever the reason, I don't think that most of us would be able to recognise and respond to a clear truth if it was presented to us in the simplest way - as this warning has been. I haven't heard this message disrupting or disturbing the social networks I operate in and I've got some very intelligent and aware friends and acquaintances.
It's disturbed me though and I'm doing something about it.

And then there's Don....
http://localbodies-bsprout.blogspot.com/2011/06/brash-bashes-bureaucrats-with-nazi-slur.html
What are you going to do Robert?
"Clear,unmistakable evidence."
http://www.weatherzone.com.au/news/little-relief-for-darwin-as-record-cold-continues/17900
Heh! Oh yea of course as the warmists say "weather is not climate"
Don's a dodo bsprout.
Wildcrafty - the things I've been doing to date plus plenty more. Vague I know but nevertheless climate change is the focus of most things I do. Yappin' about it s one thing and not a wasted effort, imo.
FBB - the most reasonable approach to making sense of conflicting scientific material must be to look at the size and breadth of the community presenting those reports, their credibility and professional statements and their record to date. Then apply your mind to the evidence, guided by non-scientists who are skilled in sifting the truth from the great mass of information that exists about most things, then look to others at your own level of experience and hear what they are thinking about it all, then make up your mind. It's simple really :-)
Basically, whatever clowns like Don Brash and Ian Wishart say, believe the opposite.
i won't comment on Don Brash except to say that he very nearly beat Helen Clark (the PM who changed the law to avoid a prosecution) and would have if it wasn't for some bribery with KFC in South Auckland to reluctant Labour voters to the polls.
Ian Wishart on the otherhand is one of the few real investigative journos we have who is prepared to publish without political or any other bias. (eg the winebox)
Frankly I think his science is better than Nick Smiths. On reflection, thats not saying a lot but I'm sure you get my point.
This global warming thing is a distraction from the real issues such as Waituna which one issue on which we have measure of aggreement. I certainly commend you for your efforts in that area.
Thanks FBB, re Waituna - the editor of our Regional rag seems to think that Nick is signalling that ES will be the next Environment Canterbury. Exciting.
AS to Don, we disagree. Wishart? Disagree very strongly :-)
FBB, what was the story behind Helen Clarke and prosecution?
From The Guardian, 28th June 2011:
One of the world's most prominent scientific figures to be sceptical about climate change has admitted to being paid more than $1m in the past decade by major US oil and coal companies.
Dr Willie Soon, an astrophysicist at the Solar, Stellar and Planetary Sciences Division of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics, is known for his view that global warming and the melting of the arctic sea ice is caused by solar variation rather than human-caused CO2 emissions, and that polar bears are not primarily threatened by climate change.
But according to a Greenpeace US investigation, he has been heavily funded by coal and oil industry interests since 2001, receiving money from ExxonMobil, the American Petroleum Insitute and Koch Industries along with Southern, one of the world's largest coal-burning utility companies. Since 2002, it is alleged, every new grant he has received has been from either oil or coal interests.
In addition, freedom of information documents suggest that Soon corresponded in 2003 with other prominent climate sceptics to try to weaken a major assessment of global warming being conducted by the UN's leading climate science body, the Nobel prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Soon, who had previously disclosed corporate funding he received in the 1990s, was today reportely unapologetic, telling Reuters that he agreed that he had received money from all of the groups and companies named in the report but denied that any group would have influenced his studies.
FBB, I'm afarid that's a load of rubbish.
Lab+Greens+Progs won more than 150 000 more votes than the Nat-Act in the 2005 election. That's a lot of KFC (the persistence of this myth boggles me)
Ian Wishart is an idiot, a creationist who doesn't understand evolution, and a climate denier who doesn't understand climate. In Air Con he even argues that the added CO2 in our atmosphere isn't from industry - even though there is less CO2 in the atmosphere that what we've released through fossil fuels and the only other potential source, the ocean, is gaining CO2 not losing. If you can make an error that basic, why should we care about what he says. Especially when about 97% of the people who actually work in the field thing he's wrong?
The idea that curbing out greenhouse gas emissions comes at a cost to other environmental programs doesn't make sense to me either.
This global warming thing is a distraction from the real issues such as Waituna
Couldn't have said it better myself.
AGW is the 'environmentalism' of choice for the lazy and ineffective while they enjoy their lifestyle blocks and Chardonnay that modern society has provided them.
The rest of us watch on as the real destruction continues unabated.
the reason why Oz is having a cold spell is that it is also have a very wet spell in the north and centre of the country and the rain which is a much better heat sink than air is sucking the heat out of the atmosphere - total heat in the system is probably not reduced to the extent that the atmospheric values would indicate plus weather patterns are out of whack resulting in NZ being 2 deg warmer so far this winter
Those 2 degrees darkhorse, are causing an increase in the insect populations at my house. This could have ramifications. While Australia might be a wonderful place, I don't envy them their bugs.
"This could have ramifications."
More fantails survive the winter?
Hope so. The tui, btw, have discovered us, due to the jammy water we've started putting out for the first time this year. They're bold fellows!!
Robert did you know that most fantails in NZ will be lucky to reach 3 years? (the oldest ever found in NZ was only 3) but in Australia they have been known to reach 10 years old.
Quite sad really.
I got some fantastic pics of a fantail this week while doing a job for DoC. This particular bird had figured out that the long drop shelter was full of mosquito's and had developed a system of devouring them. It would drop inside the structure and grab all the mossies in an extremely acrobatic display, then pop outside to the same branch each time. The little fellow was also picking sand flies off my legs and even grabbed one of my head!
None of the other fantails would enter the shelter like this particular bird, it also held still for the camera a bit better!
Delightful critters.
Cool Shunda - you gonna publish the pics?
