Stiffening resolve in the South

Environment Southland has been getting it in the neck from the public for being too accommodating to the hopes and dreams of dairying.

Nice opener there Mr Editor. Your piece in today's Southland Times delivers both briquettes and bouquets (I know, brickbats already but lignite is always on the table these days) and describes the relationship between dairying and ES pretty well.
Worth reading.

Hiya Robert,
I think councils are coming under a lot more pressure from the public to stop giving these guys a 'carte blanche' to pollute.

Freshwater is key to all of our wellbeing (shameless plug to my take on it here http://thekapailife.blogspot.com/2011/05/freshwater-or-is-it.html)

The Herald ran this Op Ed piece by Kevin Hackwell today http://www.nzherald.co.nz/opinion/news/article.cfm?c_id=466&objectid=10727547

plenty of farmers have had a gutsful of this water rush by their less-caring contemporaries too. have you seen River Dog yet?

um, and to avoid cutting and pasting, how do you hyperlink refs in a response to blog posts?

Yes Piwakawaka, we are indeed, though in the case of the council I sit on, Environment Southland, the greater pressure is coming from the councillors themselves. There is no 'carte blancehe' given to farmers that allows them to pollute, believe me, yet many of them do it anyway. I think public pressure, unrelenting, will continue to move councils in the right direction and remind them of what the people who voted them in, want from them.
I'm really interested in how often the term 'gutsful' is coming up in recent weeks - it's quite noticable. I'm thinking that there is a connection between coliforms and stomach 'upsets' and people are consciously or unconsciously, connecting the dots.
Thanks for the link to your writing. I'll read it as soon as I get home (I'm dressing windows at the Environment Centre just now.)
River Dogs, not yet but very keen.
I don't know about hyper links in comments but if you copy one from another source and paste it in, it works.

Watched the trailer Piwakawaka and will see the full River Dog as soon as possible. It looks excellent.
