"The Government is exploring legal options that may see it dispatch a navy vessel to stop Greenpeace from interfering with Petrobras' search for oil and gas."
Key, calling in the cops of the sea?
Good grief!
The protests against Petrobras, owned by the Brazillian Government, drilling for oil off the East Coast of New Zealand has been initiated by East Coast Maori, who were setting bonfires up and down the beaches a year ago to protest the proposed off-shore, deep-sea drilling they believe threatens their customary rights to the moana there. Now Key is calling in the Navy to protect the Brazillians!
"Meanwhile, an airforce Orion aircraft had also been dispatched to the area on an "observation" basis."
So the airforce is being employed also, in favour of the Brazillians.
I wonder how the New Zealanders feel, seeing their own Government deploying our forces against them?
Iwi have been active in their attempts to dissuade the oil drillers from setting up in the area.
"Meanwhile, Ani Pahuru-Huriwai, of protest group Ahi Kaa, told the Herald she had helped organise a meeting on Sunday between Petrobras executives and representatives from protest groups and iwi Te Whanau a Apanui and Ngati Porou."
"Ms Pahuru-Huriwai confirmed two of the Petrobras executives began crying during the meeting when faced with the strong opposition. She said the executives talked about their workplan, their commitment to environmental protection and financial capacity.
"We weren't interested because it's not about money, it's mana and our ability to feed our families from our traditional 'supermarket'."
The Government is acting directly against iwi here. This is a fight worth watching.

yes Rob good post - you have your finger on the pulse of this one. Will the forces of the state be used? It wouldn't be the first time so we will watch with interest indeed.
Authoritarianism runs rampant in Key's office Marty - watch out!
Robert Winters post is funny. Sticks indeed!
so what you are saying is that it is ok for the protestors to stop a companey doing what they are legally intitled to do, does this make the protestors above the law?
blah - protesters protest and have their right to protest protected by law - don't they?
Calling in the Navy and the Airforce against New Zealanders peacefully protesting - don't you feel the slightest unease about that?
Sounds like something that would happen under a foreign dictator...
John 'Mugabe' Key, and Gerry 'Saudi Arabia of Coal' Brownlee, 'the Don' (China's man of the people), and Lignite 'low wages' Bill. A gaggle of lignite and liquid fossil fuel lovers.
Arresting Tiki Taane for playing a song, and then sending the Navy and Air Force on greenpeace and locals on the East Coast opposed to dangerous deep sea oil drilling... the most darkest of crimes: not wanting a deep sea oil spill...
What is next: making clean air illegal?
Commenting on blogs more likely Anonymous - fomenting an up-rising you are!

PM Sends Military Against Peaceful Protest
Will the NZ government use the SAS on Dr James Hansen?
James Hansen will be touring New Zealand next month, giving a public lecture entitled “Climate Change: a scientific, moral and legal issue” in Auckland, Palmerston North, Wellington, Dunedin, Gore and Christchurch (schedule below the fold). Coal and lignite will be a major focus of his visit, and he’ll be participating in a symposium on “the future of coal” in Wellington on May 17th. Solid Energy’s CEO Don Elder will also be there, which should guarantee an interesting divergence of opinion. Hansen will also visit Southland to see the site of Solid Energy’s proposed lignite developments.

Elder's an expert at spinning Anonymous. James Hansen says he's not a debater, he just researches and thinks well.Sharp debaters win debates. This coal issue is a slow burner.
The Don is fast and loose on facts, so maybe slow and steady will win the race (in a debate) against him).
In any case, it is a symposium they are both speaking at and not a debate. Will be an interesting event.
Also a marked difference to the stage managed Solid Energy AGMs. How will the Don handle the public scrutiny?
There will be challenging questions.
Chip, chip, chip away at the coalface.
I'd like to hear from Elder about gas sequestration. Where are you going to put it Don and who's going to pay if it's 'off-set'?
He has no answer to that question. Like the government wanting to have deep sea oil drilling before there is legislation, Solid Energy and their Chinese cohorts want to mine Southland and Otago Lignite, before any clear climate policy is developed.
Solid Energy has no plans for emissions capture in the deep south, just plans to get their CEO and board, and Chinese backers very rich very fast, from filthy dirty low grade coal. We saw what a badly planned coal mine looked like on the West Coast.
We don't need a badly planned energy policy, and more lack of long term planning from Gerry Brownlee and the bulldozer gang.
The joke is on New Zealand. No one is laughing.
