Plans for the first step in Solid Energy's industrial developments near Mataura were published today.
An application has been filed with the Gore District Council and amongst the details of that, there was this gem:
"Solid Energy says that the visual impact of the plant would be less than minor despite a 30m-high boiler-baghouse stack and other structures 19m and 11m in height.
It plans to plant vegetation and have a 4m high earth bund with a wooden fence on top."
That's alright then. The 30m-high chimney will be barely visible!

Forget the chimney, the bund with a timber fence will look like some weird sort of flat topped Pinus pyramid!!
Will that really blend in down that way? I saw some weird things when I was down there, but not that weird!

There are a lot of Southlanders who would look at a big chimney and think 'beauty!'.
Two of those wrote to the editor today to share their excitement about lignite with the rest of us (with a little Green-bashing thrown in for good measure).
Other than not being there at all, what would you have them do? Make it shorter?

I'm just enjoying the incongruity of their mitigation plans. It seems a bit ludicrous to suggest that a pile of dirt and a wooden fence will mask a towering chimney.
Mitigation plans. hehe.

Skimmed through, found it very odd - strident somehow and brought Roger Douglas' face to my mind's eye - not appealing.
