"Jim Hansen's solution is as follows. He suggests that fossil fuel should be taxed, initially a little but rising each year. If the coal or oil is produced at home, it is taxed at the extraction point. If it is from overseas, it is taxed as it crosses your border. The tax increases are such that in about 10 years it will make electricity generated by coal about equal in price to electricity generated renewably."
There's more and it's very good. Read The Hansen Solution at Thoughts on the Roof.

Coal for steel or carbon fibre is not so bad, but it's use for electricity generation is outdated and a waste of resources.
Personally I think we should keep it for our own (responsible) use and nor export it all as fast as we possibly can.
Fonterra uses huge volumes of coal.
White milk powder from black coal.
Curious combination.
Reduce our exports Shunda!!
How will we ever catch Australia???
@Shunda 'we'? Who is this 'we'?
Had a look at Hansens work and there are some truly awesome assumptions. Terrifying. Interesting, but not surprising to see the solution based around taxation and wealth re-distribution, though.
Do you have thoughts about the fossil fuels 'situation' Shane?
'We' is 'us' Shane.
Wesus?
Us as in you & Bob?
There are lots of voices out here who are "we" and "us".
Does that include me, then?
Do you want it to Shane ?
:)
Are you you or 'us' Shane?
Are we you too?
Oh me, I am all for voluntary association. Backed by sound property rights.
So does that make me us? I still don't know who 'us' is, and what it means. Am genuinely curious though.
