A room full of mayors

Yesterday, much to my surprise, I found myself milling about amongst mayors. And deputy mayors. Quite a few of them. It was a curious situation. They spoke amongst each other, and looked quite capable. They represented Invercargill, Gore, Dunedin, Central Otago, Queenstown, Waitaki and Southland. All addressed the audience with descriptions of their expectations of the job they'd landed and issues they faced. Some were natural speakers, relaxed and commanding, others were nervous and read from notes. One had a soporific effect. Most were men, many were grey or bald. An unusually high number of those in the room were noticably short.
You'll be pleased to know that the venue was not plush and the catering not sumptuious.
Those mayors and deputys seemed nice people.
