Ngai Tahu and kelp

Tiny Metzger of Bluff makes poha titi from kelp in the same way his tupuna did i nga wa o mua and knows where to collect the live kelp needed to line the totara bark vessels in which the muttonbirds are stored.
He'll have thoughts about the Government's action in opening the kelp beds up for commercial exploitation, though I don't know them. I can guess though.
Here,  Alicia Hebbend raises concerns from Ngai Tahu Tribal Council senior fisheries advisor Nigel Scott, who says that he was disappointed that iwi concerns had been ignored over the granting of quota to harvest live kelp.

"The Kelp Bladder provides a unique environment and habitat for sea creatures like fish and crayfish that they rely on". Mr Scott said.

Maori Fisheries will receive 20 per cent of the quota.

“I’m picking we will probably leave it in the water”, Mr Scott said.

Despite the irony of that statement, I suspect he means it and Rakiura Maori in particular, will be deeply disturbed by this exploitive move from the Government and the kelp harvesting industry.

For myself, I'm disgusted by it.

Do you know how they harvest it Robert?
It would be interesting to know whether the method is destructive as well as the removal of the kelp.
Anything that can not be seen is very easy to get away with.

The Rakiura mMaori Shunda?
They cut it with a knife, leaving most of the kelp intact.
The commercial harvesters will use mechanical blades. They are probably basing their calculations on the myth that kelp grows a metre a day.
How we love to mine the environment.
No doubt they'll market it as 'sustainably harvested' kelp.
Ssutainable like the orange roughy fishery, the whitebait, the oysters etc. etc.

When Tasmanian old growth logging was allowed to continue to supply pulp production, one mighty conservationist took a stroll through the forest with a nail gun and punched thousands 10 inch steel spars into every tree in sight. Little harm to the trees, but a mill blade shattering every 20 minutes gave the loggers a literal run for their money!

Southland Submarine Sabotage Strategy?

Perish the thought Nick!
(You'll need galvanised nails btw)

How we like to mine the environment Robert? Only one letter away from 'changing our old habits of the past to creating new potentials for us now'. How we like to 'mind' the environment. What we focus on is where the energy flows!!I'm still trusting in our intelligence shining through - forever the optimist!

nice photo i remember making kelp bags and hang them on the line for pocket money when i was a kid
commercial harvesters should leave it alone. As things stand the sub standard water flowing into the sea at the moment and harvesting will only increase the speed of decline of the coast line

Kiaora Charles
Nau mai haere mai koe ki taku blog!
I have enjoyed your comments over on Paddy's blog and can see that you are engaging with the thinking public far better than most other candidates. I sincerely hope that you are successful in your campaign to get elected.
E pa ana ki nga rimurapa - you are correct on both counts - the Riverton/Aparima beds are much depleted as a result of (I believe) the poor quality of the water coming down the Aparima and Pourakino rivers. I would hope that nga runaka o te ropu nei would kick up a big stink if any commercial operator tried to establish their business down here!
To me its a very sad indication of how low we have sunk with regard our combined kaitiaki responsibilities.

Shunda - the Titi islands off Rakiura?
Owned by Rakiura Maori (ask Charles) but managed very well indeed (in cooperation with some other agencies - it's a complex story)
Don't tell Kate!

Poppy - 'mine' to 'mind'.
That's very good.
I'm with you there.
