Gumption!

Gumption is my favourite word!
The editor likes it too.

"We're taking the approach that getting elected to a local authority should be no less a test of gumption than serving on one."

The editorial in today's Southland Times gives a good stropping-up to candidates who have failed to dent the public consciousness and are, seemingly, pressuring our fine rag to give them air-time during which they can promote their wares - good thing too, that stropping, I say! I've not seen many (any) of them out on the streets as I cycle campainingly by!
That editor! He's on fire!

"And folks, this ability to engage with the public is not a requirement that kicks in after an election. It has already kicked in.

So the many hundreds of people who have put themselves forward need not hold their breath waiting for the invitation to tell The Southland Times all about their love of democracy."
