"Lies, damned lies, and statistics"

From the Southland Times today:

"A public perception survey, commissioned by coal mining giant Solid Energy, has found that most people in the Gore district are supportive of large-scale lignite mining."

The heading given to the small report is interesting:

Public supports mining

"About 70 per cent of those surveyed who live in Gore and Mataura were in favour of lignite mining while those living further afield were more negative about it."

"The survey's detailed findings would be released to the media today and would be available on the Solid Energy and Ravensdown websites."

A timely report, given that there is a meeting tomorrow morning in Gore where Solid Energy is to report on it's progress and plans.
I'll be there.

This stands out as interesting:

Overall, people living in Gore/Mataura are more supportive of mining and using Southland lignites than those living in Invercargill and Bluff.

Major issues identified were

possible pollution of air/water (232 people) and environmental damage (222), while other issues were the need to repair environmental damage (56), possible protest action (34), damage to roads (29), noise (27) and possible health issues – mainly respiratory (22).

People living in Gore/Mataura have been subject to a lot of pro-mine, good-news reports for some time now.
People living outside of those areas considerably less so.

Do you have a link to the actual survey or can we only read what was printed in the paper?

Interesting that they appear to have surveyed a grand total of 835 people - only 353 of whom hailed from the Gore/Mataura area. That hardly seems a representative sample - and to claim that 'most people' in the area support their proposals seems a fairly inventive interpretation of the survey!

You're back Meg!
Great. I went to the 'coal breakfast' and posted about it here:
