Y'gotta say something...

(Candidates for the Environment Southland council have to submit a statement to be published alongside of their mug-shot in the rags that choose to cover the local body elections. Here's mine. Feel free to comment.)

The issues that concern me are water, milk, coal and oil.

We have in Southland plenty of resources: more water than most regions, increasing quantities of milk from an expanding dairy industry, huge deposits of lignite beneath our farms and oil reserves on and off-shore.

How we manage these resources will be critical.

Environment Southland has an important role to play in decisions around these issues and the councillors who represent the people of Southland must take their responsibilities seriously.

I will advocate strongly for environmental protection where each of these activities are proposed and be the voice for those who value a clean and healthy Southland environment.

Water connects quite deeply to the other three - one big oil spill near Bluff... the water needed in coal mining and the effects of certain forms of dairy farming.. and the effect that that can have on rivers..

means Water is very important and we need to do a much better job preserving clean water.

I'd vote for you anonymous - your grasp of the issues is very good.
Water is the critical element in most of the activities that are being lined up for development in Southland and as a result the most vulnerable to harm. Where the possible risks from industries like oil extraction and dairy farming are very high, I want to be amongst those who make decisions about the worth of either promoting or restricting those industries.
